General Descriptions of Volunteer Opportunities Programs

Bus Safety Week - August 25th – August 29th
Bus Safety Week’s goal is to ensure safe, efficient, economical, and high-quality transportation to schoolchildren on their trips to and from school and school-related activities.

Chair and Co-Chair Duties:

  • Coordinate activities of Bus Safety Week for Columbia Elementary.

  • Coordinate with the City of Madison for theme and any citywide contests.

  • Procure any items or giveaways associated with the week’s activities.

  • Coordinate volunteers as needed.

  • Coordinate training of Bus Safety for students in grades K-2 by holding safety seminar on school bus.

  • Volunteer Duties:

  • Assist Chair and/or Co-Chair in program as needed.

  • Fire Safety Week – October 13th – October 17th
    Since 1922, NFPA's focus on fire safety has been teaching people how to prevent fire and protect themselves and their loved ones from its associated dangers.

    Chair and Co-Chair Duties:

  • Coordinate the activities of Fire Safety Week for Columbia Elementary.

  • Coordinate with the City of Madison for theme and any citywide contests.

  • Procure any items or giveaways associated with the week’s activities.

  • Coordinate with local Fire Department for visit to Columbia Elementary School.

  • Coordinate volunteers as needed

  • Volunteer Duties:

  • Assist Chair and/or Co-Chair in program as needed.

  • Red Ribbon Week – October 27th – October 1st
    Red Ribbon Week is a United States initiative of prevention and education about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. During this week in October, students all over the country make pledges to live drug and alcohol free.

    Chair and Co-Chair Duties:

  • Coordinate the activities of Red Ribbon Week for Columbia Elementary.

  • Coordinate with school counselors and central office for theme and any citywide contests.

  • Procure any items or giveaways associated with the week’s activities.

  • Coordinate volunteers as needed.

  • Volunteer Duties:

  • Assist Chair and/or Co-Chair in program as needed.

  • Reflections - October
    The Reflections Program provides opportunities for students to express themselves and to receive positive recognition for their artistic efforts.

    Chair and Co-Chair Duties:

  • Coordinate the activities associated with the annual PTA Reflections program for Columbia Elementary.

  • Coordinate volunteers as needed.

  • Coordinate with PTA and central office for theme.

  • Procure any items or giveaways associated with the program.

  • Copy entry forms and directions and distribute.

  • Volunteer Duties:

  • Assist Chair and/or Co-Chair in program as needed.

  • Space Week – April 20th – April 24th
    A week of fun filled, hands on learning activities celebrating Space Week.

    Chair and Co-Chair Duties:

  • Coordinate the activities of Space Week for Columbia Elementary with Teacher representative.

  • Volunteer Duties:

  • Assist Chair and/or Co-Chair in program as needed.

  • Fundraisers

    Super Market Cards – On going throughout the year
    Kroeger, Publix and Star Market offer programs in which a percentage of parent’s individual grocery sales go directly back to Columbia Elementary.

    Chair and Co-Chair Duties:

    • Coordinate with local supermarket programs to comply with requirements.
    • Procure and distribute cards and program information to parents of students at Columbia Elementary.
    • Set up collection procedures.
    •  Include the information in the Newsletter and distribute flyers.
    • Attend Open House with information for parents.
    • Coordinate volunteers to assist as needed.

     

     

    Book Fairs
    A large variety of books are for sale during the week and on Parent Nights. This is an awesome way to donate books to Columbia Elementary, your child’s individual classroom and increase your at home library. A portion of the proceeds go directly to the Columbia Elementary Media Center.

    Fall Book Fair ~ November 3<sup id="a3mp89">rd</sup> – November 7<sup id="a3mp90">th</sup>

    Spring Book Fair ~ TBA

    Chair and Co-Chair Duties:

    • Coordinate with media specialists and fundraising companies to comply with all requirements.
    • Set up book fair in media center, restock, and break down as needed.
    • Coordinate volunteers as needed.
    • Collect all monies, tally and turn in to the PTA Treasurer daily.

     

    Volunteer Duties:

    • Work 30 minute to 1 hour shift assisting Chair and Co-Chair with sales, restocking shelves and assisting students with wish lists and purchases as needed.

     

     

    Box Tops/Campbell’s Soup Labels – On going throughout the year
    A program that allows parents to clip the small box top label or Campbells soup labels on products that they normally purchase. Labels are then sent into the Box Top/Campbell Soup Label program for reimbursement. 

    Chair and Co-Chair Duties:

    • Facilitate the collection of Box Top Labels and Soup Labels.
    • Coordinate with companies to comply with all requirements.
    • Sort, count and submit labels/box tops to companies for monies.
    • Collect all monies and turn in to PTA Treasurer and/or track points and assist in the selection of prizes.
    • Coordinate volunteers as needed.

     

    Volunteer Duties:

    • Assist Chair and Co-Chair in collection of Box Tops/labels.
    • Meet to cut and sort items and submit to company.

     

     

    Elf Store - December 8<sup id="a3mp115">th</sup> – December 12th
    A fun and exciting gift shop. Children and their families purchase special gifts for loved ones and friends.

      Chair and Co-Chair Duties:

    • Facilitate the Elf Store for Columbia Elementary.
    • Coordinate with vendors to comply with requirements.
    • Procure items for sale.
    • Coordinate with volunteers to wrap all items prior to function for ease of sale.
    • Collect all monies, tally and turn in to the PTA Treasurer.
    • Coordinate volunteers as needed.
    • Set up, restock and break down event in Media Center.
    • Collect all monies and turn in to PTA Treasurer daily.

     

    Volunteer Duties:

    Columbia Carnival – TBA (Spring)
    A fun filled Saturday with games, food items, raffles and silent auctions.

    • Facilitate the Spring Fling for Columbia Elementary.
    • Coordinate with vendors to comply with requirements.
    • Procure items for prizes and games.
    • Procure items for silent auction and general raffle.
    • Work with food vendors to meet all requirements.
    • Coordinate volunteers as needed.
    • Set up, restock and break down event as needed.
    • Collect all monies and turn in to PTA Treasurer.

     

     

    School Spirit Sales – On going throughout the year
    A variety of Columbia Elementary apparel items such as t-shirts and sweatshirts for students and adults alike. Columbia Elementary decals are also available.

    Chair and Co-Chair Duties:

    • Coordinate with design and ordering of School Spirit items including apparel and decals.
    • Coordinate Volunteers as needed to sell items at PTA meetings, Breakfast with the Principal, and Family Fun nights through out the year.
    • Count all monies and turn in to PTA Treasure at the end of each function.

     

    Volunteer Duties:

    • Work shift as scheduled to sell School Spirit items to families attending school functions.

     

     

    Original Art Works – January
    Turning original art work into professionally made products you can wear and share.

      Chair and Co-Chair Duties:

    • Assist the Art Teacher in the Original Art Works Fundraiser for Columbia Elementary.
    • Coordinate with the Fundraising Company to comply with their requirements.
    • Collect all monies associated with the fundraiser, tally and turn in to the PTA Treasurer.
    • Coordinate volunteers to assist as needed.
    • Coordinate distribution of product when delivered from Fundraising Company.

     

     

    General PTA

    Renaissance - on going through out year
    The mission of the Renaissance Program at Columbia Elementary School is to acknowledge the educational achievements of students, reward the outstanding contributions of staff, and recognize the commitment of Columbia Elementary School’s community partners.

    Chair and Co- Chair Duties:

    • Coordinate the Chairpersons, activities and awards associated with the Renaissance Program.
    • Coordinate volunteers to assist as needed.
    • The mission of the Renaissance Program at Columbia Elementary School is to acknowledge the educational achievements of students, reward the outstanding contributions of staff, and recognize the commitment of Columbia Elementary School’s community partners. This is accomplished through a number of programs at Columbia Elementary School, such as the following:.

     

    Achievement Recognition:

     

    Achievement Recognition is a program designed for K-2<sup id="a3mp171">nd</sup> grades and special education classes to recognize the efforts of the students each grading period. (All students receive a reward). Pottery By You, Macaroni Grill, Sonic and Friday’s have been Community Partners for this program in the past.

     

     

    Honor Roll:

     

    A & A/B Honor Roll (3<sup id="a3mp188">rd</sup>-6<sup id="a3mp189">th</sup> grade) rewards students are rewarded for their academic achievement. Domino’s Pizza has been our Community Partner for this program in the past.

     

     

    Perfect Attendance:

     

    Perfect Attendance rewards students who have no absences for the school year. Applebee’s, Sonic and Hollywood Video have been our Community Partners for this program in the past.

     

     

    Shining Stars:

     

    The Shining Star Program rewards achievements of K-2nd Graders who make "Good Character Choices" for 9 weeks. Teachers, volunteers and staff give students “shining star tickets” when they are “caught being good”. Each month the winning class for each grade (K-2) receives a visit from the treasure chest.

     

     

    Star Cards/Character Development:

     

    Students are rewarded for showing strong character. Students are nominated by educators and entered into a drawing monthly.

     

     

     

    Hospitality

    Chair and Co-Chair Duties:

    • Coordinate volunteers for variety of hospitality functions including teacher workdays, award ceremonies, breakfast with the principal and teacher appreciation luncheons, descriptions to follow:

     

    Volunteer Duties:

    • Assist in providing baked goods or other items as needed for luncheons and staff development days.

     

     

    Breakfast with the Principal:

    Coordinate volunteers to bring in muffins, bagels etc for meetings. Set up to be completed prior to 9am meeting. Purchase juice and coffee items for meeting.


    Teacher Appreciation:

    Variety of volunteer needs working under Chair and/or Co-Chair including planning and execution of decorations school wide as well as catered luncheon for staff.

     

     

    Other PTA Sponsored Programs

    Media Center

    Chair and Co-Chair duties:

    Coordinate volunteers as needed and working with Media Specialists for specific needs in the Media Center

    Volunteers Duties:

    • Work 1-2 hour shifts cleaning, sorting and returning books to shelves and otherwise assisting Media Center staff.

     

     

    Field Day K-5: TBA

    Chair and Co-Chair duties:

    • Work with vendors for inflatables and supplies needed for event.
    • Meet and coordinate dates and times of event with Administration.
    • Coordinate general volunteers to fill shifts as needed.

    Volunteers Duties:

    • Work shifts in specific stations i.e. face painting, inflatable’s, relays etc.

     

     

    Field Day 6th Grade: TBA

    Chair and Co-Chair Duties:

    • Attend meetings for overview of this year’s event and coordinating staff lunches and volunteers for event.

    Volunteer Duties:

    • Work shifts in predetermined area i.e. front gate, concessions etc.

     

     

    Website/Newsletter/Calendar

    Chair and Co-Chair Duties:

    • Coordinate with Administration and PTA Board on dates and items to be included.
    • Complete items in timely manner for submission to PTA website as well as to Administration for inclusion to listserve notices.

     

     

    Tutoring

    Volunteers are needed to work with individual children or a small group of children who need extra help/enrichment during school hours.

     

    Art Fair

    Coordinate with Art Teacher(s) to exhibit student art at fair. Assist Art Teacher (s) with miscellaneous projects such as hanging art and special projects.

     

    Done in a Day

    Volunteers are needed for a variety of activities/projects throughout the school year. Typically volunteers are needed for 1-4 hours. Volunteer needs might include School Photo Day(s), Scoliosis Testing, Vision and Hearing Testing, copying, as well as a variety of other needs as they arise. Often Done in a Day volunteers are called the week of an event.

On the survey there is a section to be completed if you have special skills that might be helpful to Columbia Elementary School but are not listed in a specific category – please take the time to fill this section out so that we will know what area of expertise you offer.
